How Warehousing Can Cure Wastage of Food Grains in India

Published on: 2024-02-05

India, known as the breadbasket of the world, is facing a critical issue: the staggering waste of approximately 20 million tons of wheat annually due to inadequate storage infrastructure. Dr Tim Fox, Head of Environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, sheds light on this problem in the recently released report, 'Global Food: Waste not, Want not'.

The lack of proper storage and transportation facilities is causing immense losses, affecting hardworking farmers and leading to volatile fluctuations in grain prices. According to the report, 1.2-2 billion tons of foodgrains are wasted globally, with developing countries bearing the brunt of the losses between the farm and the marketplace.

In India, the absence of sufficient storage infrastructure results in detrimental dips in wheat prices, impacting farmers who strive tirelessly to feed the nation. However, there is a viable solution at hand – the establishment of warehouses.

Warehousing offers a practical remedy to the challenges faced by Indian farmers. By having adequate storage facilities, farmers can withhold their produce when market prices are unfavorable and release it when conditions are more conducive, ensuring a stable income. This not only benefits individual farmers but contributes to the overall stability of the agricultural sector.

Stability in grain prices is a crucial factor for the hardworking individuals who toil in the field's day in and day out. The availability of warehouses enables farmers to secure higher profit margins, mitigating the adverse effects of price fluctuations.

The Indian government recognizes the urgency of this issue and is actively supporting the establishment of warehouses. Capital subsidies of up to 30% and interest rate subsidies of up to 3% are being offered to encourage the development of storage infrastructure. Here at EffoLogic | Empowering MSMEs we are at the forefront of addressing this critical issue. We are actively involved in supporting farmers by providing financing and subsidies for the establishment of warehouses.

Let's rally behind the call for increased investment in warehousing infrastructure in India. It's not just about preventing food wastage; it's about empowering our farmers, ensuring stability in their income, and fostering a resilient agricultural sector that will sustain our nation for generations to come. 🌾🏭 hashtag#WarehouseForFarmers hashtag#AgriculturalSustainability hashtag#SupportIndianFarmers hashtag#EffologicConsultancy
